Do ghosts lurk in the shadows of the Historic Adams House? Have you ever felt the hair on the back of your neck stand up? You can find these answers and many more by participating in a real paranormal investigation with Black Hills Paranormal Investigations (BHPI) in October.
We are looking forward to hosting John Beheler, South Dakota Humanities Council Speakers’ Bureau Scholar, on Friday, August 19 at the Historic Adams House at noon. John was scheduled to speak in April, but due to an illness he was unable to travel to Deadwood.
John Beheler’s presentation will offer an Indigenous perspective about culture, spirituality, and the origins of the Dakota and Lakota people. He will examine what America was like before Columbus, where the first peoples came from, what lessons can be learned from our ancestors, and how it is possible we are all related.
Deadwood History is excited to offer visitors to the Historic Adams House two new tours during the summer months. Every Wednesday evening a specialized Victorian Era Tour focusing on the lives of the Franklin family will take place from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Visitors will discover interesting and unknown facts about the family and the unique architecture of the house. Guests will learn about the many intricacies of Victorian etiquette, how the hired help was treated, and the threat of a fire. After the tour, everyone will gather on the yard to play lawn games and enjoy savory foods and beverages. The Roaring Twenties Tour will take place on Friday evenings from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and provide a detailed description of the Adams family and the unique story of their lives in Deadwood.
Deadwood History will host a Kids Summer Recreation Fair on Tuesday, May 3, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC). Children and their parents will discover many of the activities and opportunities available for kids over the summer months. Representatives from a variety of organizations will be on hand to explain the camps, workshops, and classes they have to offer children. This fair is designed to be a one-stop shopping experience for parents to learn more about the unique, interesting, and fun recreational activities kids can take advantage of in the local area. When school is not in session, it’s important to keep children’s bodies active and their minds engaged. The Kids Summer Recreation Fair will help parents make informed decisions about how to do just that.
Deadwood History's curator of collections, archivist and registrar will present a workshop to teach participants how to properly care for textiles, photographs and negatives, paper materials, metals and other things you might find among your keepsakes. Demonstration stations will be set up to allow a better understanding of how agents of deterioration—light, humidity, temperature and pests—can adversely affect some of your favorite keepsakes. The workshop will feature a hands-on segment where participants can practice some of the tips and techniques of preservation practices explained by our staff.

Have you ever felt the hair on the back of your neck stand up? Do ghosts lurk in the shadows of the Historic Adams House? You can find these answers and many more by participating in a real paranormal investigation with Black Hills Paranormal Investigations (BHPI) in October.
You will learn the history behind the darker stories associated with the Adams House on an exclusive 90 minute paranormal investigation of one of Deadwood’s most haunted sites. Participants will search for paranormal activity using night vision cameras, full spectrum cameras, a binoptic anomaly camera, digital audio recorders, EMF meters and the SB-7 Spirit Box. The BHPI team will discuss documenting and analyzing the results of possible paranormal phenomena during the investigation and explain the findings from their recent investigation of the historic home. The tours may also reveal some of the findings from the Ghost Adventures two hour Deadwood special that will air October 31 on the Travel Channel, where Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin and team filmed at the Adams House, and several other haunted locations in Deadwood.
